Estimation of Median Nerve Axonal Degeneration without Needle Electromyography

نویسندگان

چکیده

Background and Aim: The present study aimed to use the median nerve Compound Muscle Action Potential (CMAP) amplitude by stimulation at palm instead of Abductor Pollicis Brevis (APB) needle Electromyography (EMG) for determining axonal loss in patients with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). Methods Materials/Patients: This was performed on 180 CTS referred Electrodiagnostic (EDX) Center, Poursina Hospital, Guilan Province, Iran, 2018-19. In this study, APB EMG diagnostic test used as gold standard, CMAP wrist were compare two tests. Results: All cases abnormal detected also had an APB. So could be a good indicator if there is abnormality (sensitivity: 73%, specificity: 100%). results not accurate stimulation, some decreased normal muscle 86.6%, 94.9%). Conclusion: CTS, abnormally loss.

Needle electromyography.

Physiologic assessment of diseases of the motor unit from the anterior horn cells to the muscles relies on a combination of needle electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS). Both require a unique combination of knowledge of peripheral nervous system anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, diseases, techniques, and electricity is necessary. Successful, high-quality, reproducible EM...

Motor amplitude of median nerve with stimulation in the palm a reliable indicator for axonal loss in carpal tunnel syndrome

Background and Aim: The present study aimed to use the median nerve compound muscle action potential (CMAP) amplitude by stimulation at the palm instead of abductor pollicis brevis (APB) needle electromyography (EMG) for determining a sign of axonal loss in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Methods and Materials/Patients: This study was performed on 180 patients with CTS referred to ...

Myelin Sheath Survival following Myelinated Nerve Fibers Axonal Degeneration

Axonal contact plays a critical role in initiating myelin formation by Schwann cells. However, recent studies of “double myelination” have indicated that myelin maintenance continues in Schwann cells completely displaced from physical contact with the axon. This raises the possibility either that diffusible trophic factors are produced by the axon, or that the axon is not required for myelin ma...

Resistance to axonal degeneration after nerve compression in experimental diabetes.

To determine the effect of diabetes on the development of axonal degeneration after acute nerve compression, the mobilized peroneal nerves of rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes and of control rats were compressed at 150 mmHg (1 mmHg = 133 Pa) for 30 min by using specially devised cuffs. At three intervals after compression--3 days, rats diabetic for 31 wk; 14 days, diabetic for 6 wk; and...

Hematoma risk after needle electromyography.

INTRODUCTION Although needle electromyography (EMG) appears to be a relatively safe procedure based primarily on clinical experience, no evidence-based guidelines exist for EMG procedures in patients taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications. We sought to determine whether there is an increased risk of hematoma formation after EMG of potentially high-risk muscles in patients taking antic...
